Luminato Festival 2013 in Toronto
In its sixth year, Luminato
is a week-long festival that celebrates a broad range of artistic genres—the
stage, the written word, and visual arts. During the week, performances, talks,
lectures, and Tweet Ups happen throughout Toronto. Get a jump on the festivities
at the Big Bang Bash, June 8, 2013, Luminato’s inaugural fundraising event that
features the exhibit Dolls by
Victor&Rolf fashion design. It will be held at the Royal Ontario Museum.
Avant-garde performance artist Marina Abramovic puts her own life story on the stage with The Life and Death of Marina Abramovic, directed by Robert Wilson.
World-renowned actor Willem Dafoe is cast as the narrator, and Antony Hegarty
has composed mesmerizing original music.
The second show is Joni: A Portrait in
Song—A Birthday Happening Live at Massey Hall, a tribute to the songstress
by some of the world’s top stars. Feng Yi
Ting is a short opera composed by Guo Winjing and directed by Atom Egoyan.
The Luminato Premiere
series is a bargain when you consider what you get — three shows for as low as
$154.50. These include New York’s Mark Morris Dance Group’s L’Allegro, il Penseroso ed il Moderato
A popular Luminato event is The New York
Times Talks, a series of chats with cultural luminaries. This year’s
Luminato Times Talk will include
director and artist Robert Wilson and actor Willem Dafoe interviewed by John
Rockwell. Movie director Atom Egoyan will talk with Daniel Waken, and Joni
Mitchell will chat with Jon Pareles. Architects Charles Renfro and Liz Diller
will also take the stage with Robin Pogrebin.
