Dedicated to bringing the beauty of Islamic culture to the masses, this newly opened facility is equally impressive inside and out. Designed by Fumihiko Maki, the structure embraces the essence of light, symbolic of the many ways in which Islam has lit mankind’s way throughout history. With the Aga Khan Museum, Toronto boasts one of the world’s most unique places, housing a permanent collection of over 1,000 artifacts – including scientific instruments, artwork, manuscripts, and ceramics – a pair of exhibition galleries, an open-roofed courtyard, 2 classrooms, and a very special 350-seat auditorium.

Performing Arts & Film Screenings

Throughout the year, the museum plans to host all sorts of events, such as lectures, debates, culinary demonstrations, live music, dance, readings, and film screenings. Many of these will be held in the hexagon-shaped auditorium – a true beacon of the museum’s unique design. Some of the most compelling events include The Hive Jam Sessions, when local artists and the general public are offered the opportunity to cross-culturally improvise with visiting performers.

Who is the Aga Khan?

An important leader of Shia Ismaili Muslims, the Aga Khan is regarded as a direct descendent of Muhammad, who has dedicated his life to improving conditions for followers around the world. In that spirit, he founded the Aga Khan Development Network, with more than 80,000 employees focused on healthcare, education, economic, and environmental concerns in developing countries.
